It never fails to amaze me how different poison ivy can look from one plant to another, one place to another.

This very mild winter in the northeast will likely result in an early spree of poison ivy sprouting. 

Poison ivy tends to be among the early ones to leaf out (and early to give up in fall).

This photo, taken on April 14th in Bedford, Massachusetts, shows a poison ivy vine that is way ahead of most of the poison ivy here in New England. Most other poison ivy had just shown the tiniest of red leaf buds at this date.

It has been a cold, late spring up here in New England, but today will reach the mid 80s, so plants will be exploding into full leaf.

spring differences in poison ivy leaves

Here we have a good example of how different poison ivy leaves can appear, from the first leaves of spring.

Notice how the top "leaves of three" is a typical set of three, all pointed, about the same size.

Spring poison ivy

Now that spring has finally arrived, the poison ivy is going bonkers, growing fast up here in the north. Down south, it is already in full leaf, with flowers and berries not far behind.
