Information about poison ivy, oak, sumac and the skin rashes they cause
Here is a tree that is covered by many layers of poison ivy swarming all over it. Many people might not recognize this as a mass of poison ivy vines, but it is. And in a few weeks, the whole thing will be covered with bright red poison ivy leaves. But it is common for people to cut these vines off of a tree without realizing they are poison ivy. Cutting the vines releases large quantities of the urushiol oil and next day someone might wake up with a hospital grade skin rash.
